Abstract

Objective: Due to the limited research on childhood trauma, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and psychological distress in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), this study aimed to compare these factors between people with IBD and healthy individuals and to explore the relationships among them.

Methods: This cross-sectional case-control study included 62 participants: 30 adults diagnosed with IBD who presented to Sivas Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Medicine Hospital and 32 healthy individuals without this diagnosis. Only patients who were in remission at the time of assessment were included in the IBD group. Data were collected using a sociodemographic information form, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Vancouver Obsessive Compulsive Inventory (VOCI), and serum albumin levels.

Results: Significant differences were observed between the IBD and healthy control groups in CTQ, VOCI, and DASS-21 scores (p < 0.050). The severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms was positively linked to depression, anxiety, and stress (p < 0.050). Childhood trauma also showed positive correlations with depression, anxiety, stress, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (p < 0.050). In addition, childhood trauma showed a significant negative correlation with serum albumin levels (p < 0.050).

Conclusion: Individuals with IBD showed higher levels of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, childhood trauma, and psychological distress than healthy controls, and these variables were significantly associated with one another.
